Differential diagnosis of the heel pain syndrome is a common problem for practicing doctors. The diagnosis of etiology of the back heel pain syndrome is necessary for selection of an appropriate treatment. The pathogenesis of the heel pain are not well understood, which leads to the lack of common diagnostic criteria and algorithms, which are needed to select the most effective treatment strategy. There are two types of pain in the heel area: lower heel pain and posterior heel pain. Initial treatment options should be simple and efficient. Basic diagnostic methods and treatment strategies of the heel pain syndrome are discussed in this article.
