Objective: to evaluate the psycho-emotional and dental status of athletes and determine its’ relationship with athletes’ performance. Materials and Methods: 30 male athletes engaged in non-contact power sports, and 30 sedentary men, aged 18 to 45 years. Psychological characteristics of subjects in each group were studied by methods of psychodiagnostics. The prevalence of major dental diseases was assessed. The results of the study were statistically processed using the method of correlation analysis.
Results: Data received from the Quality of Life questionnaire (SF-36) show declines in mental health component, the results of the survey on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) show no significant signs of anxiety and depression, the level of situational and personal anxiety on a scale of anxiety BH Spielberg and YL Hanina can be estimated as «moderate». Analysis of dental status of athletes, showed that the average value of the index of the intensity of caries (IC) is equal to 9.9±5.46, and the index of the prevalence and intensity of periodontal disease (CPITN) – 2±0.67, non-carious lesions were observed in 60 % of the patients, indicating a significant prevalence of major dental diseases. Correlation analysis of the results demonstrates the close and significant relationship between the indices of the IC, CPITN, the presence of non-carious lesions and the parameters of the quality of life questionnaire, which characterize the mental health component.
Conclusions: professional activities should be focused not only on stabilizing of the major dental indices, but also on the prevention of functional dental disorders.
