THE ERYTHROCYTE SEDIMENTATION RATE AS A RELIABLE MARKER OF THE CURRENT FUNCTIONAL STATE OF ATHLETES AND THE DEGREE OF THEIR FITNESS

Objectives: Comprehensive analysis of regulatory, hematologic, biochemical parameters of blood and circulation of elite swimmers in terms of long-term adaptation.
Materials and Methods: Indicators of cardiac activity regulation, morphological and biochemical blood parameters, ESR and general physical performance of elite swimmers were investigated at rest by cardiorhythmography metod.
Results: Numerous close relationships were established between the examined parameters of cardiac rhythm variability and ESR, ESR and immunoglobulins, and all these indicators with sportsmens’ physical performance.
Conclusions: The authors can give recommendations to use the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) as a reliable marker of the current functional state of an athlete and the degree of its’ adaptation to the muscle loads. This conclusion results from the analyses of these relationships and the discussion of the physiological mechanisms of the long-term adaptation to the muscle loads.
